Infrared offers capabilities not available with night vision or visible light cameras. It allows one to truly see in total darkness. Unlike other technologies, ambient light is not required. Infrared viewers respond to the heat given off by an object. As warm-blooded animals are usually warmer than their surroundings, they can be easily distinguished from their surroundings, even in total darkness.
Since IR cameras operate in a different waveband than visible cameras and night vision devices they aren't as effected by light sources such as headlamps or flashlights. The display won't be lost due to intensifier saturation.
